Museum Celebrates Truman?s Love of Baseball

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. ? Just in time for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the Harry S Truman Presidential Library is opening a special exhibit featuring Harry and Bess Trumans love of the All-American sport: baseball.

?Presidential Pitch? curator Clay Bauske enjoyed sorting through the archives, finding things like baseballs autographed by Yogi Berra, letters from Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson and a baseball from a movie called ?The Winning Team? autographed by the movie?s star, Ronald Reagan.

Bauske also found editorial cartoons using baseball metaphors, including one showing Truman throwing a curve ball to republicans.

Truman may not have thrown any actual curve balls but he did throw out the first pitch for many baseball seasons, including the first ever pitch when the Athletics moved from Philadelphia to Kansas City.

?Harry Truman is the first and believe only president who threw out first pitches of the baseball season both left handed and right handed, so he was ambidextrous,? says Bauske.

Maybe the Kansas City Blues liked Truman?s arm. Bauske also found an actual contract ? with a $1 signing bonus ? to play for the minor league team.

?That was in 1953 after he left the presidency, obviously he?s not going to play baseball,? Bauske says chuckling.

Bess Truman was actually the bigger baseball fan, Harry once said she was a very graceful player. On the other hand, Harry didn?t play much as a boy because of poor eyesight.

?So in baseball games he was often asked to be the umpire,? says Bauske. ?Ironic since his eyesight was bad.?

Truman attended more games while president, than any other president. He started in 1945, after World War Two ended, because he hoped going to the game would be a symbol of peace returning to the nation. In all, he attended 16 games while president.

For comparison, President Richard Nixon was also a big baseball fan but only attended 11 games, and George W Bush (who was also a baseball team owner before becoming president) only went to 10 games while in office.

The exhibit opens Friday and ends shortly after the All-Star game leaves town. But as Harry himself once said, ?May the sun never set on American baseball.?

Delaware Becomes First State to Legalize Online Gambling

Delaware became the first US state to legalize online gambling when their legislature voted the Delaware Gaming Competitiveness Act of 2012 into law. It?s expected that Delaware residents could start playing roulette, poker and slots for real money online as soon as January 2013.

The online gambling law allows Delaware residents to play casino games online from their own homes. Gambling online will be strictly limited to residents; and age and address verification procedures will be put in place to insure minors and out of state residents don?t get in on the action.

Why Offer Online Gambling?

Delaware?s gambling bill conceived and introduced to the legislature by state Governor Jack Markell. Markell was concerned that the state?s three legal casino racetracks were losing money and were planning serious layoffs. Though land based casinos will be the major beneficiaries of the bill, they won?t be seeing any of the revenues directly.

Under the Delaware plan, land based casinos will get big breaks on licensing fees (as much as $7 million) while the state collects the revenue from the online casinos. The state lottery commission will be running the online casinos and using the revenue to offset the lost licensing fees.

The bill also authorizes Delaware authorities to enter into gaming compacts with other states. Already, West Virginia has shown interest in this type of partnership.

East Coast Arms Race

Casinos in Delaware, and elsewhere on the Eastern Seaboard, have been feeling the heat from increased gaming competition in the region. That?s why Delaware officials aggressively pushed the state?s gaming bill into law just six months after the Department of Justice decision last December that essentially legalized online gaming.

In passing the bill, Delaware has a real shot at becoming the Silicon Valley of gambling, an honor New Jersey desperately covets. After all, they?ll get first crack at all of those other states that want gaming revenues without actually dealing with sticky infrastructure and licensing issues.

Although Delaware is the first state to actually pass legal online gambling legislation, it?s believed that Nevada will be the first to actually offer online gaming.

What do you think of Delaware?s move to become the first state to offer online gambling to its residents? Let us know on our Online Gambling Laws and Regulations Forum.

Vitor Belfort has strong feelings on shaving

Vitor Belfort missed out on the chance to fight in front of a home crowd over the weekend, as he had to pull out from his bout with Wanderlei Silva because of an injury. However, he is not going to miss on the chance to tell fellow Brazilians how to shave.

In other Belfort news, the UFC is still hoping for a fight between Belfort and Silva, and they are aiming for an October show in Brazil. However, Belfort doesn't think that fight makes sense and would rather fight Michael Bisping, and then get another shot at the UFC middleweight belt. He's also open to moving to light heavyweight, and he isn't afraid of Jon Jones.

Consider this your daily Vitor Belfort briefing. You are now briefed.

Asteroid hunters want to launch private telescope

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Who will protect us from a killer asteroid? A team of ex-NASA astronauts and scientists thinks it's up to them.

In a bold plan unveiled Thursday, the group wants to launch its own space telescope to spot and track small and mid-sized space rocks capable of wiping out a city or continent. With that information, they could sound early warnings if a rogue asteroid appeared headed toward our planet.

So far, the idea from the B612 Foundation is on paper only.

Such an effort would cost upward of several hundred million dollars, and the group plans to start fundraising. Behind the nonprofit are a space shuttle astronaut, Apollo 9 astronaut, former Mars czar, deep space mission manager along with other non-NASA types.

Asteroids are leftovers from the formation of the solar system some 4.5 billion years ago. Most reside in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter but some get nudged into Earth's neighborhood.

NASA and a network of astronomers routinely scan the skies for these near-Earth objects. And they've found 90 percent of the biggest threats ? asteroids at least two-thirds of a mile across that are considered major killers. Scientists believe it was a 6-mile-wide asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs.

But the group thinks more attention should be paid to the estimated half a million smaller asteroids ? similar in size to the one that exploded over Siberia in 1908 and leveled more than 800 square miles of forest.

"We're playing cosmic roulette. We're flying around the solar system with these other objects. The laws of probability eventually catch up to you," said foundation chairman and former shuttle astronaut Ed Lu.

Added former Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart: "The current priority really needs to be toward finding all of those asteroids which can do real damage if they hit or when they hit. It's not a matter of if; it's really a matter of when."

Asteroids are getting attention lately. NASA nixed a return to the moon in favor of a manned landing on an asteroid. Last month, Planetary Resources Inc., a company founded by space entrepreneurs, announced plans to extract precious metals from asteroids within a decade.

Since its birth, the Mountain View, Calif.-based B612 Foundation ? named after the home asteroid of the Earth-visiting prince in Antoine de Saint-Exupery's "The Little Prince" ? has focused on finding ways to deflect an incoming asteroid. Ideas studied include sending an intercepting spacecraft to aiming a nuclear bomb, but none have been tested.

Last year, the group shifted focus to seek out asteroids with a telescope.

It is working with Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., which has drawn up a preliminary telescope design. The contractor developed NASA's Kepler telescope that hunts for exoplanets and built the instruments aboard the Hubble Space Telescope.

Under the proposal, the asteroid-hunting Sentinel Space Telescope will operate for at least 5 1/2 years. It will orbit around the sun, near the orbit of Venus, or between 30 million to 170 million miles away from Earth. Data will be beamed back through NASA's antenna network under a deal with the space agency.

Launch is targeted for 2017 or 2018. The group is angling to fly aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, which made history last month by lifting a cargo capsule to the International Space Station.

Experts said the telescope's vantage point would allow it to spy asteroids faster than ground-based telescopes and accelerate new discoveries. NASA explored doing such a mission in the past but never moved forward because of the expense.

"It's always best to find these things quickly and track them. There might be one with our name on it," said Don Yeomans, who heads the Near-Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which monitors potentially dangerous space rocks.

Aside from the technological challenges, the big question is whether philanthropists will open up their wallets to support the project.

Nine years ago, the cost was estimated at $500 million, said Tim Spahr, director of the Minor Planet Center at Harvard University who was part of the team that came up with the figure for NASA.

Spahr questions whether enough can be raised given the economy. "This is a hard time," he said.

The group has received seed money ? several hundreds of thousands of dollars ? from venture capitalists and Silicon Valley outfits to create a team of experts. Lu, the foundation chair, said he was confident donors will step up and noted that some of the world's most powerful telescopes including the Lick and Palomar observatories in California were built with private money.

"We're not all about doom and gloom," Lu said. "We're about opening up the solar system. We're talking about preserving life on this planet."

John Stossel on Why Discrimination in the Health Insurance Market ...

Discrimination is what makes insurance work. An insurance regime where everyone pays the same amount is called "community rating." That sounds fair. No more cruel discrimination against the obese or people with cancer. But community rating is as destructive as ordering flood insurance companies to charge nothing extra to insure a very vulnerable beach house, writes John Stossel, or ordering car insurance companies to charge Lindsay Lohan no more than they charge you. Such one-size-fits-all rules take away insurance companies' best tool: risk-based pricing. Risk-based pricing encourages us to take better care of ourselves.

Google goes up against Amazon, Apple with Nexus tablet

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc will sell its first tablet from mid-July for $199, hoping to replicate its smartphone success in a hotly contested market now dominated by Amazon.com Inc's Kindle Fire and Apple Inc's iPad.

By taking a greater role in the tablet market, Google hopes to ensure that its various online services remain front-and-center to consumers amid a changing technology landscape in which tablets by Apple and Amazon are increasingly becoming gateways to the Web and Web-based content such as movies and music.

Google's maiden entry in the tablet market, which will also see the advent of Microsoft Corp's Surface this year, could also help accelerate development of tablet-specific applications for its Android operating software -- a key factor that has helped popularize Apple's iPad, analysts say.

The "Nexus 7" tablet, built by and co-branded with Taiwan's Asus, was one of several gadgets unveiled at its annual developers' conference on Wednesday, as the Internet search and advertising leader dips its toe into the intensively competitive consumer arena.

The announcement of the new tablet comes a month after Google acquired its own hardware-making capabilities with the $12.5 billion acquisition of smartphone maker Motorola Mobility. But Motorola, which Google has said it will run as a separate business, was absent from most the new products and services showcased at the event.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin demonstrated Google Glass, a futuristic-looking eye-glass-computer that can live-stream events, record, and perform computing tasks. The device will be available to U.S.-based developers early next year for $1,500.

And it unveiled the Nexus Q - a $300 device with a built-in amplifier that lets users stream content from Android devices onto their TVs.

But the Nexus tablet hogged the spotlight. Sold initially only on the Google Play online store, its $199 price tag and 7-inch stature is aimed squarely at the Fire, but the Nexus has a front-facing camera while Amazon's tablet does not.

Analysts consider the Fire a window into Amazon.com's trove of online content rather than an iPad rival, given the $499 that Apple asks for a device with a "retina" display that far outstrips it in terms of resolution.

Google can similarly use the Nexus 7 to connect to its own online offerings, which include YouTube and Google Play, the name of its online store where it sells digital music, movies and games. It will go after more cost-conscious users who might shun the pricier iPad.

"Nexus 7 is an ideal device for reading books. The form factor and weight are just right," said Chris Yerga, Google director of engineering for Android.

Google said it will offer buyers of the Nexus 7 a $25 credit to spend at the Google Play store and it showed off several media-centric capabilities, such as a new magazine reading app.

"They all but called it a Kindle Fire killer. They're clearly gunning for that No. 2 spot behind Apple's iPad that is currently occupied by Kindle," said Altimeter Group analyst Chris Silva. "But the con is they do not yet have a footprint in people's minds and wallets as the go-to place to purchase and consume media."

JELLY BEANS

Google has partnered with smartphone makers to develop Nexus-banded smartphones for several years, providing a showcase product that delivers Google's ideal vision for a device based on its Android software.

Extending the Nexus concept to tablets should similarly establish a model that other hardware makers can emulate, resulting in a more a competitive and uniform line of Android tablets to market, say analysts.

Shares in Google gained 0.8 percent to $569.37 in afternoon trade.

The Nexus will feature the new 4.1 "Jelly Bean" version of Google's software, as well as a front-facing camera, a 1280x800 resolution screen, and an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.

Google's free Android software is the No. 1 operating system for smartphones, with about 1 million Android devices getting activated every day

But it has struggled to compete with Apple's iPad in the market for tablets, largely because it lags far behind Apple and Amazon in terms of available content and tablet-specific applications, such as games.

Meanwhile, Apple has increasingly moved to reduce its dependency on Google services on its devices. Earlier this month it unveiled its own mapping software, which will replace Google maps as the default mapping service in the next version of its mobile operating system.

And Amazon's Kindle Fire, while based on Google's open-source Android software, features a customized interface that does not use many Google services.

Executives showcased the new 4.1 "Jelly Bean" version of Android operating system on Wednesday. The new software delivers faster performance, according to the company, and new features such as "voice search."

"That range of services will be the secret to stitching together this rag-tag fleet of Android gadgets into a platform that can compete with Apple for minutes of users' attention rather than premium device dollars," said Forrester analyst James McQuivey.

The tablet's limited availability - executives said they had no plans yet to expand distribution beyond Google's own site - may curtail initial sales growth.

Google briefly sold a specially designed Android smartphone - the Nexus One - directly to consumers in 2010, but closed the online store after four months saying it had not lived up to expectations.

But it's the lack of "native" applications - software designed with a larger tablet in mind, rather than ported from smartphones - that is the Nexus' biggest impediment for now.

"Unless you have a strong app offering, for a consumer it is a piece of glass that does what a phone does on a larger screen," Carolina Milanesi, analyst at Gartner Research.

Nokia 808 PureView review: the future of mobile imaging, wrapped in smartphone's past

The Nokia 808 PureView has a 41-megapixel camera sensor. But you knew that. The crystallization of five years of imaging R&D has landed, and the timing couldn't have been better for Nokia. Alongside uncomfortable financial reading, its move to Windows Phone hasn't exactly set the smartphone world alight just yet. It's seemingly established itself as the go-to WinPho choice for American customers thanks to some aggressive pricing, but with news that the next iteration of Windows Phone won't come to the Lumia 900, many will hold out for Nokia's next handset. Whatever that device will be, it's likely to bring the same PureView technology we've got here on the Nokia 808 PureView -- a Symbian-based handset whose software has seen better days. However, OS be damned, it still blew away attendees at this year's Mobile World Congress. Impressive stuff, given that it's the same show where HTC's admirable One series debuted.

That huge sensor is paired with a new five-element Carl Zeiss lens and a refreshed flash with double the strength of the one on the Nokia N8 -- the existing cameraphone champ. But behind the technical bullet points, it's how Nokia maximizes the 41-megapixel sensor, oversampling with those pixels to create improved 5-, 8- , 3- and 2-megapixel images, reducing noise and improving low-light performance. However, when it comes to software, Symbian Belle (with Feature Pack 1 in tow) lags behind the likes of Android, iOS and Windows Phone in user experience and app provision. Similarly, the chunky handset flies in the opposite direction of the trend for slim smartphones. Is that camera module really all Nokia thinks (and hopes) it is? What's more, is Symbian relevant enough for such future-facing goodness? Let's find out.

How homicide homes hold their secrets

MRIS

In this Maryland home, in what's considered a nicer neighborhood just outside Washington, D.C., a father and daughter were murdered in 2002. The subsequent owner was shot and killed there in 2010.

By Bill Briggs

Days after closing on his dream home ? a brick colonial near the Washington, D.C., school he was toiling to save ? principal Brian Betts learned of his property?s ghastly past.

Inside the house, 11 months earlier, an intruder had shot and killed a 9-year-old girl and her father. Horrified, Betts demanded the transaction be rescinded. When that effort failed, he invited two ministers to pray over his new place. Then Betts tried to paint over the grim history, refinishing the woodwork and refurbishing the kitchen.

Seven years later, in April 2010, a robber shot and killed Betts in his bedroom.

?In Maryland, there?s no obligation on Realtors to disclose that a murder took place at a home, much less two murders ? and subsequently three,? said Rene Sandler, an attorney for Betts' family. ?Brian was just getting to know his neighbors when one told him he was surprised someone bought the house given what had happened. Brian was absolutely shocked. His Realtor never said anything.?

Last February, the same house sold again, this time at almost $200,000 below asking price.

Welcome to a macabre corner of American real estate, a legally gray, emotionally black sector governed by a mishmash of varying state laws that dictate whether agents must divulge that bad things went down in what the National Association of Realtors calls ?stigmatized properties.?

Only two states, Alaska and South Dakota, mandate that sellers? agents reveal whether a homicide or suicide occurred at a listed home within the previous 12 months, according to NAR spokesman Walter Molony. In Connecticut, Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota and Oklahoma, if a prospective buyer asks about past bloodshed, real estate agents must truthfully answer the question.

?In most states, a seller isn't required to voluntarily disclose nonstructural issues such as homicides on the property,? said Holden Lewis, a real estate expert at Bankrate.com, a consumer finance service. For example, he noted that Minnesota law says "the seller doesn't have to disclose that the property was the location of a suicide, death or ?perceived paranormal activity.? ?

In Maryland, where Betts was shot to death, agents must inform buyers only about ?material facts they know or should know,? said Chuck Kasky, vice president of legal affairs for the Maryland Association of Realtors. When it comes to Maryland properties, he added, a murder is ?not a material fact.?

The reason some agents are reluctant to mention such former horrors? Money, of course. Many buyers would be uneasy if not queasy about living in a space where a life ? or several lives ? ended in a disturbing way, even if the tragedy happened years before.

Such ?psychologically impacted homes? languish longer on the market than comparable properties and sell for about 3 percent less, according to a study authored in 2000 by two professors at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Their peer-reviewed paper, based on an examination of 102 ?stigmatized? homes in Ohio, was published in the Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education.

Those 102 homes took, on average, 45 percent longer to sell than comparable properties without grisly pedigrees, said one of the authors, James Larsen, a finance professor.

But a homicide home?s value dip can be even steeper if it?s located in a rural area where violent crime is less common and neighborly gossip echoes for generations, contends Bennie Waller, a professor of finance and real estate at Longwood University in the central Virginia town of Farmville, population 8,200.

?There?s a country song (by Miranda Lambert) that says, ?Everybody dies famous in a small town.? In a town this size, it?s an informal communications network, and things get around pretty quickly ? even without cable,? said Waller, who has studied the real estate impacts on two local homes where killers took lives.

In 2009, four people ? two parents, their daughter and the daughter?s friend ? were bludgeoned to death in a home not far from Longwood?s campus. The 20-year-old murderer, an aspiring rapper who later pleaded guilty, knew the daughter. Before the crimes, the home was tax assessed at $240,000. Later, it was auctioned to an investor for $104,000 but it remains on the market, unoccupied, due to the emotional scars left by the homicides, Waller said.

At another house next to the school ? ?a fantastic property? with a swimming pool, Waller said, Robert Bruce shot and killed his wife in 1991. Locals still refer to the residence as ?the Bruce house.? That place is tax assessed at $200,000 but was similarly sold at auction for about $90,000. It, too, remains empty.

?My wife and I actually looked at (buying) it,? Waller said. They jointly decided not to make an offer.

?I?m a finance-real estate guy so I looked at it from an investment perspective. My wife is my wife,? Waller said.

If it were to come down in price, Waller said he would reconsider buying it.

"I don?t care what people say," he said. "But it would probably be an investment rather than a property we would live in. Because college kids don?t give a damn (about its gory past). I could put six kids in there, (rent it) and make money.?

While those two infamous Farmville homes remain available, Brian Betts? family had preferred that his two-story, three-bedroom house in Silver Spring, Md., simply vanish after his death.

?The family?s wishes were to essentially have it bulldozed for who ever was going to acquire that property to just start anew,? said Sandler, the family?s attorney. However, the principal's estate still owed money to the bank for the home's mortgage.?

Despite good schools nearby and its?locale in an upscale neighborhood popular with federal workers, ?it sat on the market for a very, very long time,? Sandler said. ?And (in time) the house went to foreclosure.?

Fannie Mae acquired the property, and in May 2011, it was listed for $515,000. It sold in February for $330,000, according to Zillow.com. The family believes that buyer knew about the property?s history.

?Two things really bothered Brian about the purchase. He was an educator, an educator who truly made a difference in kids? lives ? I mean something for the movies,? Sandler said. ?Knowing that a child was murdered in that house, much less a child and her dad, really impacted him.

?But then you have the piece where it was just intentionally not disclosed,? she added. ?This was a Realtor that Brian was on friendly terms with, not somebody he just picked at random. So that level of deception, if you will, was very unsettling.??

Paraguay's ousted president defiant after 'coup'

Jorge Adorno / Reuters

Paraguay's ousted President Fernando Lugo holds a news conference outside his home on Sunday.

By msnbc.com news services

ASUNCION, Paraguay - Ousted Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo branded the country's new government illegitimate on Sunday and called for democracy to be restored as neighboring countries intensified criticism of his sudden impeachment.

Lugo, a leftist former Roman Catholic bishop, said his removal from office was "a parliamentary coup against the will of the people" and said he would back any peaceful effort to restore democracy in the South American nation.

Congress voted overwhelmingly on Friday to remove Lugo from office, saying he had failed in his duty to maintain social order following a bloody land eviction.

Under the Paraguayan constitution, the impeached president was replaced by Vice President Federico Franco, a vocal critic of Lugo for much of his presidency.

Franco's newly appointed foreign minister urged Lugo to help quell the regional tensions, saying it was his "duty as a Paraguayan citizen and former president."

Paraguay under pressure from neighbors after Lugo is ousted

But Lugo refused to help his successor.

"We support any kind of peaceful effort aimed at restoring institutional order that was interrupted by Parliament," he told reporters.

"This is a fake government. You can't collaborate with a government that doesn't have legitimacy," he said, adding that he would attend a summit of the regional trade bloc Mercosur later this week to explain the situation.

Argentina, which currently holds Mercosur's rotating presidency, said Franco's government would not be allowed to attend the meeting.

'A pariah'
In a region scarred by military coups and political upheaval in the 1970s and 1980s, the rapid nature of Lugo's impeachment by an opposition-controlled Congress has drawn strong criticism -- especially from fellow leftists.

A senior Brazilian official said Paraguay would likely be suspended from the regional UNASUR grouping and from Mercosur, which also includes Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

"The point is to make this new government a pariah," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Regional powerhouse Brazil has recalled its top diplomat for consultations and the ambassador is unlikely to return while Franco remains in the presidency, the official added.

Oil shipments halted
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Lugo's removal as president was illegal, halted oil shipments to Paraguay and withdrew his ambassador from the country. Argentina's Cristina Fernandez pulled top envoy out on Saturday.

"We don't recognize this government. I've ordered the amassador in Asuncion to pack his things and leave," Chavez said in a speech. "We're going to stop sending oil too."

Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA supplies about a quarter of Paraguay's oil needs under a deal that lets countries buy crude on soft financing terms and even pay in farm goods.

Chavez compared Lugo's removal to the 2009 coup that removed Manuel Zelaya in Honduras.

Nations including Canada, Spain and Germany recognized the new government after Lugo said on Friday he would accept the congressional vote to remove him. Others, including Chile and Colombia on Sunday, have summoned ambassadors for a briefing.

Federico Franco, center, replaced Fernando Lugo as president.

Lugo has suggested that national and international clamor could lead Paraguayan lawmakers to reverse his impeachment.

Despite the chorus of international criticism, Paraguay's low-key riverside capital was calm on Sunday. Fewer police were patrolling the streets than in recent days and restaurants and businesses were open as usual.

"Lugo was useless but what happened in Congress was a joke -- it was like pigs talking about hygiene," said Benjamin Aguayo, 18, in downtown Asuncion.

A small group of Lugo supporters gathered outside the state TV studios to demonstrate in favor of his return to office.

Lugo's impeachment was sparked by clashes that killed six police and 11 peasant farmers during a recent land eviction. He was one year away from completing his five-year term.

Paternity scandals
Paraguay is one of the poorest countries in South America and Lugo, 61, vowed to improve the quality of life of low-income families when his election ended six decades of rule by the conservative Colorado party.

But he struggled to push reforms, including land redistribution to poor peasant farmers, through Congress. A cancer scare and several paternity scandals dating back to his time as a bishop added to his difficulties.

When his allies from the Liberal Party withdrew support for him on Thursday, they cleared the way for the impeachment trial.

In contrast to Lugo, Franco has solid backing among ranchers and farmers in the world's No. 4 soybean exporter.

"The agricultural industry is going to be a priority, no question about it, because it's vital for Paraguay," said Liberal lawmaker Gustavo Cardozo.

Assad says Syria at war as battle reaches capital

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad declared on Tuesday that his country was at war and ordered his new government to spare no effort to achieve victory, as the worst fighting of the 16-month conflict reached the outskirts of the capital.

Video published by activists recorded heavy gunfire and explosions in suburbs of Damascus. A trail of fresh blood on a sidewalk in the suburb of Qudsiya led into a building where one casualty was taken. A naked man writhed in pain, his body pierced by shrapnel.

Syria's state news agency SANA said "armed terrorist groups" had blocked the old road from Damascus to Beirut.

The declaration that Syria is at war marks a change of rhetoric from Assad, who had long dismissed the uprising against him as the work of scattered militants funded from abroad.

"We live in a real state of war from all angles," Assad told a cabinet he appointed on Tuesday in a speech broadcast on state television.

"When we are in a war, all policies and all sides and all sectors need to be directed at winning this war."

The rambling speech - Assad also commented on subjects as far afield as the benefits of renewable energy - left little room for compromise. He denounced the West, which "takes and never gives, and this has been proven at every stage".

The United Nations accuses Syrian forces of killing more than 10,000 people during the conflict, which began with a popular uprising and has built up into an armed insurgency against four decades of rule by Assad and his father.

The U.N. peacekeeping chief said it was too dangerous for a U.N. observer team, which suspended operations this month, to resume monitoring a ceasefire. The truce, part of a peace plan backed by international envoy Kofi Annan, has long since been abandoned in all but name.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a group which compiles reports from rebels, said 115 people were killed across Syria on Tuesday, making it one of the bloodiest days of the conflict. Its toll included 74 civilians it said had been killed, including 28 in Qudsiya.

It described heavy fighting near the headquarters of the Republican Guard in Qudsiya, and in other Damascus suburbs of al-Hama and Mashrou' Dumar, just 9 km from the capital.

SANA said dozens of rebels were killed or wounded and others arrested in fighting on the old Beirut road. Government forces seized rocket launchers, sniper rifles, machineguns and a huge amount of ammunition, it said.

Accounts from the rebels and the government cannot be verified because access for journalists is restricted.

Samir al-Shami, an activist in Damascus, said tanks and armored vehicles were out on the streets of the suburbs.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said Syria must beware the wrath of Turkey after Syrian forces shot down a Turkish warplane on Friday at the Mediterranean coast. He ordered his armed forces to react to any threat from Syria near the border.

"Our rational response should not be perceived as weakness, our mild manners do not mean we are a tame lamb," he told a meeting of his parliamentary party. "Everybody should know that Turkey's wrath is just as strong and devastating as its friendship is valuable."

NATO member states, summoned by Turkey to an urgent meeting in Brussels, condemned Syria over the incident in which two airmen were killed. The Western alliance called the incident "unacceptable" but stopped short of threatening retaliation.

NATO's cautious wording demonstrated the fear of Western powers as well as Turkey that armed intervention in Syria could stir sectarian war across the region. So far there has been no sign of an appetite for intervention like that carried out last year by NATO against Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.

NO ACTION "AT THIS STAGE"

A Turkish official said Ankara's ambassador had not asked the NATO envoys for action "at this stage". Erdogan's speech was seen in Turkey as less belligerent than it might have been.

"Those who want war may be disappointed by the prime minister's speech," Turkish journalist Mehmet Ali Birand wrote. "But a big part of society breathed a sigh of relief."

Nevertheless, Turkish officials say they are ready for scenarios that include a possible need to protect civilians near the border. A Turkish official who asked not to be identified said: "For Turkey there are two bad scenarios: one, a mass influx of refugees and two, large-scale massacres in Syria."

"Ankara has not taken a decision for military intervention or a humanitarian corridor at the moment. But if these are needed, everybody would prefer that they will be done with international legitimacy. However, if things go really badly we have to be ready for any kind of eventuality," he added.

Erdogan said the armed forces' rules of engagement had been changed as a result of the attack, which Turkey says took place without warning in international air space.

"Every military element approaching Turkey from the Syrian border and representing a security risk and danger will be assessed as a military threat and will be treated as a military target," he said.

Russia, which has acted as Assad's main defender in the U.N. Security Council, called for restraint and said shooting down the aircraft should not be "viewed as a provocation or a premeditated action."

Syrian and Turkish accounts of the incident differ. Syria says it had no choice but to take out the plane as it entered Syrian air space flying low and at high speed. It found out it was Turkish only after the engagement. Turkey insists its aircraft entered Syrian air space only briefly by mistake.

Turkey is the base for the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) and shelters more than 30,000 refugees - a number Erdogan worries could rise sharply as fighting spreads. Rebel soldiers move regularly across the border and defectors muster inside Turkey.

Moscow has close relations with Damascus and has a naval base at Syria's port city of Tartus close to the spot where the jet was downed. Some defense experts said the Turkish plane could have been testing Russian-supplied Syrian air defenses.

Moscow-based defense think-tank CAST said Russia was expected to deliver nearly half a billion dollars worth of air defense systems, repaired helicopters and fighter jets to Syria this year despite international pressure to halt the arms sales.

Russia said it was crucial Iran should also attend a meeting on Syria of the five permanent U.N. Security Council members and regional players organized by Annan in Geneva this weekend.

Western countries oppose Iran, Syria's closest regional ally, taking part in the meeting and some diplomats have said it was not entirely clear whether the meeting would take place.

Jakarta Opening: Modern Art's New Home | Private Jet | Private Jet ...

'Leda and the Swan' by Yogie Ginanjar. Credit: Gallery Rachel

Gallery Rachel?s end-of-May debut is opening the doors to a new market with multi-generational appeal for investors and art enthusiasts.

In a week where foreign tourism to Indonesia is expected to increase with a more relaxed stance from international and governmental advice on leisure and travel, Jakarta still continues to tighten it?s grip as the ?Capital of cool? for Indonesian modern culture enthusiasts. The city?s long-standing reputation as the lucrative centre for business is now expanding its interests with a newcomer to the modern art scene. Gallery Rachel, a contemporary art gallery opened last month, is expected to be the first of many to help Jakarta project the country?s beautiful landscape all over city walls.

The early directive coming out of Gallery Rachel?s press suggests a focus to the future, even if many would be tempted to brand them as a new outlet for the traumatic and turbulent past decade in Indonesia?s headline-grabbing regions like Bali. Artists from Bali, Jogjakarta, Bandung and wider art communities in Indonesia were touted for the exhibitor?s opening run in Gallery Rachel?s press release. The tone from gallery director Laksamana Tirtadji was, however, clearly forward-looking in appealing to the discerning portfolios of potential art collectors: ?The significance of the expressions and artworks Gallery Rachel will be exhibiting in the years to come will offer art lovers an added value of not only providing them a channel for the collecting of art, but also a strong alternative investment that will appreciate in value for generations to come.?

In recent years, the playing field of ?contemporary art? has bracketed its proprietary up-and-coming artists into a lucrative career path of accelerated earning potential. From regions in the Middle East all the way further east to places like Indonesia, the current generation of artists, who themselves tend to hold a more globalist and collectively humanitarian mindset, are succeeding in holding favour with private art collectors able to pump sums into the market that create new stars overnight.

Places like Dubai and Saudi Arabia have actually shown themselves to be more open-minded than previously expected, to artworks that could be seen as voices of dissention within the ranks of highly patriarchal society characterising the East. Nevertheless, for this collective art movement living on the edge of conflict, a global gathering point has yet to materialise.

The obvious question remains: Is Jakarta set to be the long-awaited networking hub for young adults and older, more established heavy-hitter art collectors to come to terms? When we asked an unnamed Middle Eastern contemporary artist of notable 2011 Sotherby?s success about whether they would tour Indonesia, the response was empathically positive: ?Absolutely. If I could put my name there tomorrow, I?d be there. Jakarta has been making the rounds and talked up as a place where new artists are doing some really interesting things.?

Wherever you may fall on the social lines and political issues that continually blend into the magnificent backdrop of a place like Indonesia, from an alternative investment standpoint Jakarta does look like the tasteful bet for the next 20 years. Long championed as a travel getaway for young adults and students to broaden their social conscious, Indonesia?s art entrepreneurs are combining this channel with the commercial appeal for older generations to come and see returns on their own art portfolio appreciate for decades to come. With Australia and the region?s neighbours lowering their travel advisory notices in the same week as Rachel?s opening, it looks like Indonesia?s newly opened arms to refined travellers from abroad is no flash in the pan speculation.

Cynthia R. Green, Ph.D.: Get Passionate About Your Memory: 4 Reasons Why You Should Get Intellectually Excited Right Now

What's your latest passion?

One of the most powerful messages coming out of the brain fitness science these days is that having intellectual passions is a major factor in any good brain fitness plan. Things we do to "stretch" our minds force us to think differently or look at the world through a constantly evolving lens. While on the surface such activities seem like the most obvious way to keep our minds sharp, the science behind intellectual engagement is truly more complex than simply a "use it or lose it" equation.

So why do I and other brain health experts spend so much time getting people to stretch their brains? Why does what we do with our minds matter so much? Here are some of the reasons why I'm a big fan of being intellectually passionate at every age:

  • A passionate mind leads to a healthy brain. One measure of brain fitness is the physiological health of our brain itself. Intellectual enrichment has been associated with enhanced neuroplasticity, or the brain's ability to make new connections and grow new neurons in both animal and human studies. For example, a German study found that adults who became proficient jugglers showed increased brain volume on imaging studies.
  • A passionate mind gives us a buffer against serious memory loss. We have known for a while that staying intellectually engaged is associated with a lower risk for dementia in later life. This finding has been replicated across a number of large, epidemiological studies both here and in Europe. Such evidence has given rise to the "cognitive reserve" theory, which states that the neuroplasticity supported by such activities build a buffer zone of neural connections and new neurons that delay the onset of dementia symptoms. Most recently, a study out of Rush University Medical Center offers further support to this theory, with reported findings showing that folks who report high levels of lifelong intellectual engagement who develop memory impairment do so later in life and have a sharper and shorter period of impairment.
  • A passionate mind gives us a chance to boost daily brain skills. "Stretch activities" often help us better maintain everyday intellectual skills that are challenged by the aging process. These skills, primarily our ability to keep focused, think quickly and think nimbly, are best addressed by specific exercises played against the clock. However, engaging intellectually across the board -- be it by taking a language class or even working -- gives us more chances to "work out" those skills than we would have otherwise. Volunteering at a local youth center, for example, not only engages your mind, but also forces you to pay closer attention, hold conversations with folks you might not otherwise encounter, and think nimbly to keep up, all of which keep those daily brain skills better trained.
  • A passionate mind keeps us purposed and relevant. One of the most overlooked aspects of growing older is that we are still actually growing. Intellectual passions allow us the ways and means by which we can continue to think about and expand on who we are. Such pursuits give us the chance to constantly question ourselves, to ask the "what if" question that keeps us engaged (not to mention engaging). It is through such intellectual passions that we can learn more about our purpose and determine the legacy we wish to leave behind. While these aspects of well-being may seem more spiritual in nature, there is much to suggest that they matter greatly to brain health, in that they impact our ability to think wisely and to continue to engage richly and meaningfully in the world.

It was Rene Descartes, the French philosopher, who centuries ago counseled us that "It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well." While our understanding of the science behind having a good mind may have advanced, the advice remains the same. Take up a new language, master a new computer game, enroll for that drawing class you've always meant to take. Whatever your latest passion, pursue and enjoy! Consider such passionate pursuits part of your "Total Brain Health" prescription for staying vital and independent -- they are good for your mind, good for your brain, and, perhaps best of all, good for your spirit.

NATO to discuss downing of Turkish plane by Syria

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? NATO will hold emergency talks on Tuesday to discuss Syria's downing of a Turkish jet fighter, but the alliance is not expected to take military action, even if it confirms Turkey's claim that the unarmed plane was attacked in international airspace.

The incident has further raised regional tensions over the conflict in Syria, where some 40 people were reported killed Sunday in new clashes between rebels and government troops.

On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sharply criticized Syria for downing the Turkish plane, which Turkey's Foreign Ministry called an "open and grave violation of international law" that would justify retaliation.

"The United States condemns this brazen and unacceptable act in the strongest possible terms," Clinton said in Washington. "It is yet another reflection of the Syrian authorities' callous disregard for international norms, human life, and peace and security."

Clinton said Washington will maintain close contact with Turkish officials as they determine their response, including via the U.N. Security Council. "We will work with Turkey and other partners to hold the Assad regime accountable," she said.

Turkish state media reported Sunday that the RF-4E reconnaissance plane's wreckage was found in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 4,265 feet (1,300 meters), but officials did not confirm the report. The two pilots remained missing.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the jet was on a training flight to test Turkey's radar capabilities, not spying on Syria. He said the plane mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace Friday, but was quickly warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was a mile (1.6 kms) inside international airspace when it was shot down.

Syria insisted Saturday that the shooting was "not an attack" and that the aircraft had violated its airspace. But Turkish authorities say Syria didn't warn the Turkish plane or send its own jets to confront it.

At the request of Turkey, NATO's governing body will meet Tuesday to discuss the incident, said Oana Lungescu, a NATO spokeswoman. The consultations were called under article 4 of NATO's founding Washington Treaty.

"Under article 4, any ally can request consultations whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened," Lungescu said. The North Atlantic Council ? the ambassadors of the 28 NATO countries ? will decide whether to respond, she said.

The last time article 4 was invoked was nine years ago ? also by Turkey ? after tensions with neighboring Iraq escalated. However, that case did not lead to the invocation of article 5, which declares that an attack against any single NATO country shall be considered as an attack against them all.

"No one should dare to test Turkey's capabilities," Davutoglu said Sunday.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was expected to make a statement Tuesday and might announce some retaliatory steps.

In a telephone interview with Turkish TV news channel A Haber on Saturday, Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the downing was "not an attack.""An unidentified object entered our air space and unfortunately as a result it was brought down. It was understood only later that it was a Turkish plane," A Haber quoted Makdissi as saying. "There was no hostile act against Turkey whatsoever. It was just an act of defense for our sovereignty."

Despite some opposition leaders' calls for Western military intervention in Syria, the U.S. and allies have been hesitant to get involved in what could prove a protracted conflict, preferring the diplomatic route. Syrian allies Russia and China have shielded Syria from U.N. sanctions and stridently oppose any military intervention.

It's unlikely the downing of the Turkish plane will change those calculations, despite Ankara's appeal for the NATO meeting.

In October 1989, two Syrian MiG-21s violated Turkish air space and shot down a Turkish plane on a geographical survey mission, killing all five crew members. Syria at the time promised to severely punish the pilots, who disregarded Turkish orders not to enter Turkish airspace.

Dogu Ergil, a professor of political science at the Ankara University, told private NTV television that Turkey had repeatedly sent its jets across the Syrian border for several weeks to show its military muscle at the time.

The plane's downing drew criticism from other countries pushing Syrian President Bashar Assad to end his crack down on an increasingly armed popular uprising. Opposition activists say the conflict has killed 14,000 people, mostly civilians, over the past 15 months.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sunday he was "gravely concerned by the Syrian regime's action in shooting down" the plane.

"This outrageous act underlines how far beyond accepted behavior the Syrian regime has put itself, and I condemn it wholeheartedly," Hague said in a statement. "The Assad regime should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity. It will be held to account for its behavior."

Hague met last week with U.N. and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan for talks on plans for an international summit, while British officials discussed the issue in Geneva on Saturday with members of Annan's team. Hague noted Sunday that "the UK stands ready to pursue robust action at the United Nations Security Council."

Italy's foreign minister decried the shooting down of the plane as "a further, very grave and unacceptable action by the Assad regime." In a written statement, Giulio Terzi promised that Italy will play an active role in the NATO meeting Tuesday.

Syrian activists reported violence in different parts of the country Sunday, saying nearly 40 people were killed.

The deadliest incident was in the northern town of Ariha, where a shell hit a home killing seven members of the same family, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.? A video posted online showed the seven men's bodies, some badly mutilated, including one who had part of his head blown off.

Activists also reported intense shelling and clashes between rebels and troops in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour and the central city of Homs. Later in the day, Syria's state-run news agency SANA said gunmen kidnapped a pro-government Sunni cleric in the city of Deir el-Zour.

Earlier Sunday, activists said rebels captured a military base in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, confiscating large amounts of ammunition. The Observatory said 16 government troops died in the attacks on the base near the rebel-held town of Daret Azzeh and nearby checkpoints early Sunday.

Area activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels had removed hundreds of artillery shells from the base. Saeed added via Skype that troops retaliated with intense shelling on the area using helicopter gunships.

Syria's state-run SANA news agency, meanwhile, said gunmen from Turkey clashed with Syrian border guards in Rabiah, a region in the coastal Latakia province. SANA said several infiltrators died in the late Saturday clash, while others reportedly returned to Turkey. It said several Syrian border guards were hurt, but didn't specify how many.

Turkey denies sheltering armed Syrian rebels, although many Syrian refugees have fled to camps on the Turkish side of the border.

Average Feature Film Length ? Independent Filmmaking Tips For ...

If you are just starting out to create your feature film you may have a lot of questions. Filmmakers tend to approach making a film in many different ways. Some of them use a script or a book, while others may just go with an idea off the top of their head. The question may come up regarding how long the average feature film length should be. A better question is how many pages of script is needed to make your film the length that you want it to be.

There is no exact answer as to how long your film should be. You may have a very short script of maybe 5 ? 10 pages. On the other hand your script may be 100 pages long. Then your film length will vary depending on the changes made during the film process itself.

To help determine the length of your feature film you can use the industry average: 30 seconds of footage per page of script. Keep in mind that that is a rough guess considering that long extensive spoken lines will take longer to do that shorter or fewer spoken lines. This is something to remember if you want your film length to be a specific amount of time when completed.

If you have made any films before you will already know that there is a lot of editing to be do. Changing the layout can certainly change the time frame of the film. When you shoot 60 minutes of footage it may actually end up being closer to 30 ? 40 minutes of feature film.

The biggest problem most filmmakers face with their scrips is making sure that they have enough detail to create enough footage. It takes approximately 30 pages of script to make a 15 minute production. And then, if you edit out certain areas you will need to lengthen your script to meet your goal of a 15 minute film.

When you have a team of writers, or even just one, the task of editing the script is made much easier. Your job as filmmaker would include reading the script over and making notes about it which will help the writers to expand the story in the areas you want more details or information.

If you are one of the lucky ones who has the creative knack of expanding out a script as you go then the actual length of the script is not all that important. Certainly quite a few filmmakers have taken a short script and made it into an extensive feature film. Experience definitely helps a filmmaker fine tune a script and the longer you?ve been doing it, the easier it is to flesh out a script. the main ingredient to succeeding is having a good script to begin with that is creative and has plenty of detail. This can help you get a grasp of how long your feature film length will be and make the whole creation process more enjoyable.

1530: With three goals so far and some dazzling displays, Cristiano Ronaldo is shaping up to be the player of the tournament at Euro 2012, despite a slow start. Nevertheless, for many he's still in the shadows of Argentina's Lionel Messi. Head-to-head, Messi just shades it in terms of goals. Over the last five years, in all national and international competitions, Messi has scored 247 goals in 306 matches. That's an average of 0.81 goals per match. Ronaldo can boast 237 goals in 299 matches at a slightly-lower 0.79 goals per match.

1500: There's a mole in the German camp! Germany coach Joachim Loew is trying to plug a leak that has allowed news of his lineup plans to be all over the country's media hours before matches at European Championship. Coach Joachim Loew says he was upset by the leaks and believes agents are passing on information to the media after being informed whether their players have been selected in the starting XI or not. "I've spoken to the players about it. It's not they who leak the lineup directly. There are other channels. We'll find out."

1445: The English openly admit they won't outplay some of the better teams at Euro 2012, but in terms of tenacity and never-say-die spirit, they've traditionally been up there with the best. Says defender Ashley Cole in a BBC interview: "We're like 11 bulldogs who will never give up, who will always work for each other and basically die on the pitch for each other ... So far, it seems to be working."
