US economic data help world markets recover

LONDON (AP) ? Robust U.S. economic indicators pushed world markets higher on Tuesday, offsetting uncertainty over Europe's debt problems and global growth.

Consumer confidence in the U.S. jumped in September to its highest level since February, according to the Conference Board whose index rose to 70.3 points from 61.3 in August. Market expectations were for a more modest gain.

A separate report showed U.S. home prices kept rising in July in all 20 cities tracked. It's the third straight month in which prices rose in every city.

After early losses in Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.2 percent to 5,850.21 while Germany's DAX rose 0.2 percent to 7,424.39 and France's CAC-40 was up 0.1 percent at 3,499.27.

Wall Street opened higher, with the Dow up 0.3 percent at 13,597.01 and the S&P 500 gaining 0.3 percent to 1,460.89.

Markets had earlier traded lower on concerns that Europe's government debt problems will continue to pose a risk to the economy and investors.

Spain is due to unveil this week a new series of cost-cutting measures and structural reforms that could pave the way for a demand for financial aid from its fellow eurozone countries.

But hopes that Madrid will apply for the aid were overcome by concern that it was delaying the move. Spain has been reluctant to ask since such assistance comes with strings attached.

Another key issue is whether eurozone countries will grant Greece more time to reach its deficit reduction targets. The country also needs to finalize a package of austerity measures but political leaders are struggling to compromise as popular anger increases.

Also weighing on financial markets this week has been evidence of a broad-based slowdown in the world economy. While Europe is sliding toward recession, the U.S. and Chinese economies ? the world's two largest ? are struggling.

Credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's on Tuesday lowered its growth forecasts for the eurozone. It expects a 0.8 percent contraction this year and no growth in 2013. The biggest source of concern, it said, was Spain and Italy.

"Recent economic indicators continue to paint a bleak picture for Europe," said Jean-Michel Six, S&P chief economist for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Earlier, in Asia, trading was uneven. Japan's Nikkei 225 index zigzagged throughout the day until closing 0.3 percent higher at 9,091.54.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng was marginally higher at 20,698.68. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.6 percent to 1,991.41. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.3 percent to 4,372.90.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.2 percent to 2,029.29. The Shenzhen Composite Index fell 0.6 percent at 835.51. But benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia, India, New Zealand and Thailand rose.

In currency markets, the euro rose to $1.2965 from $1.2935 in late trading Monday while the dollar was down at 77.73 yen from 77.86 yen.

Benchmark crude for November delivery was up 62 cents to $92.55 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 96 cents to settle at $91.93 on Monday.

When is the best time to set up a bank account for the kids ...

by Kimberly on September 24, 2012

Even my three year old asks to take money out of his piggy bank to buy ice cream while we are out, so this begs the question ? when IS the best time to set up a bank account for the kids? I feel like it?s never too early to teach your kids the importance of money ? earning, saving and spending. So I feel more inclined to let Luke buy something small while we?re out with his own money but my husband feels it?s more important to emphasize teaching him to save his money. He makes a good point?without saving your money there is no spending! Both are equally important lessons and with most things in life, balance is key!

I know a lot of people who set up bank accounts for the kids from birth, because they have family and friends who prefer to start sending money as gifts for their savings early on and others who wait until they are old enough to understand the value of money. Either way, it?s a great way to help with their savings and teach them the importance and value of money from an early age.

We?ve known relatives who have started special savings accounts which I love because they are education based and as the kids turn 18 they are able to use the money towards ANY educational classes, not just college classes. So if they decide to take cooking classes, art classes etc. they can still use the money that?s been saved for them!

What?s YOUR preference for when to open and bank account for the kids and how have you managed it? Do you have family and friends send money for a bank account to start the kids savings early or are you planning to wait until they get their first job as a teenager??

Five Best Alarm Clocks [Hive Five]

Five Best Alarm Clocks The best alarm clock is the one that wakes you up, right? If that's the case, how to you choose the best alarm clocks from the worst ones? Whether you just use your smartphone to wake you, or you prefer a specific make and model with multiple alarms and gentle-waking features, this week we're going to look at five of the best alarm clocks available, based on your nominations.

Earlier in the week, we asked you which alarm clocks you thought were the best, and which ones you used when it was time to get up from a night's sleep or a power nap. You gave us some really killer nominations this week?way more than we could feature, even though we were rooting for some of the underdogs. Even so, here are your top five.

Five Best Alarm Clocks

Chumby/Sony Dash

The Chumby was one of the first great wireless, internet-connected, widget-based alarm clocks. Open hardware that was customizable, multiple models, and tons of widgets and applications to run on it?it was amazing. Chumby no longer makes hardware, but the Chumby software lives on in the Sony Dash line of internet-connected alarm clocks, in their own right are great alarm clocks, that show you weather, news, time, and other useful information as you wake. Both the Chumby and the Sony Dash can wake you to streaming music from the internet, your own songs, the radio, and more. Both devices are sadly on their way out, but you can still find Chumby and Sony Dash products in many places. If you love Chumby and can't find a device for it, check out Chumby for Android.

Five Best Alarm Clocks

Philips Wake-Up Light

If you don't have the pleasure of waking to the light of the sun on your face every morning?or know how pleasant it can be to wake to slowly rising light instead of a blaring alarm, the Philips Wake-Up Light is for you. It'll set you back about $99, but you get a combination of light and sound to wake you up in the morning, with the light slowly turning up the brightness over the minutes around your wake-up time so you can't ignore it. The idea is that the light will help you wake up more naturally and gently. The clock also has two selectable soundscapes to help you wake gently, and it's even recommended by the National Sleep Foundation. Plus, when you don't need it as an alarm clock, you can use it as a normal bedside lamp.

Five Best Alarm Clocks

iHome

iHome makes docks, bedside alarm clocks, and bookshelf speaker systems for a variety of products, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and even Android phones and the Kindle Fire. If you have one of those devices, enjoy using it from bed but don't want to leave it's poor battery to drain overnight while you sleep, iHome has a peripheral?wired or wireless?for you. Even though iHome is most popular for its iPhone docks and alarm clocks, which many of your praised for their compatibility (although I imagine iPhone 5 users with an iHome may not be too happy right now, but since I mentioned it, one of you pointed out that an iHome and an old iOS device make a perfect pair for streaming music without keeping your buzzing, beeping phone next to the bed) and affordability. Plus, many iHome docks have apps you can install on your device for even more features.

Five Best Alarm Clocks

Sony Dream Machines

Sony's "Dream Machines" refer to the company's line of traditional, old school digital alarm clocks that you plug into the wall, set an alarm on a LCD screen, and roll over and go to sleep, knowing it'll wake you to either a beeping alarm, your favorite radio station, or in some models, your favorite CD. Dream Machines are still widely available actually, and range from $20 for simple AM/FM models to super-expensive multi-hundred dollar night-vision models with screens designed to be readable at night but not wake you. There's a Dream Machine in virtually every shape and size you might need, and many of you probably got your first one a long time ago, maybe even before your first smartphone. Photo by Ged Carroll.

Five Best Alarm Clocks

Your Smartphone

Many of you pointed out that you've long eschewed traditional alarm clocks in favor of your smartphone. Whether it's iOS or Android, there are so many great and varied sleep monitoring and alarm clock applications out there that will wake you to soothing sounds, specific playlists, podcasts, or more that there's no reason to use anything else. Plus, it's probably already on your nightstand charging, and you reach for it to check your email and social networks when you wake up anyway?it's a natural fit, right? Photo by Digitpedia.

Now that you've seen the top five, it's time to put them to an all-out vote to determine the winner.

This week's honorable mention goes out to GE Clock Radios of all shapes and sizes?they were almost as popular as the Sony Dream Machines, and I think I speak for many of us who remember getting those old wood-paneled, GE alarm clocks with the red numbers and the huge snooze button on the top (and an A/B alarm system) when we were younger. It works, it works well, and many of you noted that's all you need.

Another honorable mention this week goes out to the Neverlate Executive from American Innovative, which many of you praised for offering different alarms for every day of the week that are completely customizable, so you can wake on Monday to NPR and Tuesday to your favorite music station, then to something else on Wednesday if you choose, all at different times if you have to. You can even customize the snooze durations, connect your smartphone or mp3 player to it, and more. I've owned a Neverlate Executive, and it's a fantastic alarm clock.

We got a ton of great nominees this week?way more than we could feature, even though we wanted to. Have something to say about one of the contenders? Want to make the case for your personal favorite, even if it wasn't included in the list? Remember, the top five are based on your most popular nominations from the call for contenders thread from earlier in the week. Make your case for your favorite?or alternative?in the discussions below.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it's not because we hate it?it's because it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest, but if you have a favorite, we want to hear about it. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!

Benchmarking Mobile Storage | sambeal.com

Introduction

NAND Flash is the nonvolatile memory behind SSD, mobile computing devices and mobile appliances (such as phones and cameras). Flash technology is the mainstream storage solution for mobile ? and mobile is growing dramatically. Some analysts predict tablet shipments will eclipse PC shipments by 2016.

Why Benchmarking matters

Tablet computers and smartphones place increasing demands on NAND Flash device features ? capacity, cost and bandwidth. But providing this requires a complex combination of electronic and software development. As a result benchmarking NAND Flash at the component and system level is critical to successful product design.

Benchmark testing spans a wide range of factors such as the device controller implementation, the host interface standard (SD, eMMC, UFS), type of NAND technology (SLC, MLC, TLC), device drivers and file systems and the application requirements, e.g. sequential, random, read-write, etc.

NAND Flash Technology is Tricky

Amplification

NAND Flash cells are read at the page level and erased at the block level. Cells must be erased before programmed. For example, a 16Gb NAND Flash from Micron [1], uses a 4KB page and a 512KB block. Every time data is written to a block the entire block is erased. Internally valid is copied to available blocks. In effect an external write will produce multiple internal writes.

Block Management

Block management accomplishes several tasks related to translation of logical addresses to physical addresses including bad block tagging, dynamic buffering for performance, and garbage collection. This function may be implemented in a Flash Translation Layer (FTL) in firmware or a Flash File System (FLS) running on the host.

Wear Leveling

Wear leveling manages the local to physical mapping so that erase/write cycles are distrusted evenly over the entire range of the memory array to optimize the life of the device. Typically this is implemented in controller FTL where the P/E cycle count is known. New approaches based on BER optimization are emerging. [2]

Error Recovery

Some error recovery can be implemented in the controller command logic (with extra P/E cycles) for read / write disturb errors when adjacent (unintended) cells voltage levels shift from I/O activity. Other errors such as voltage shift from alpha particles injection rely on ECC to resolve.

ECC

Error correction code (ECC) solutions are based on Hamming, Reed-Solomon, BCH [3] and LDPC. Hardware solutions scale in complexity with the NAND block size and the error correction requirements. SInce soft errors scale with shrinking NAND process geometry, the hardware costs of ECC are increasing. Low Parity Density Codes, use statistical algorithms implemented in firmware to reduce block-level BER with less integrated circuit area. [4]

Signal Processing Optimization

Beyond merely correcting errors, signal processing recovers correct bits by analyzing multiple read voltages. Integrating signal processing, ECC and FTL into the device controller, e.g. ?managed NAND? by Anobit [5]. NAND device suppliers, e.g. SK Hynix and Micron, are integrating control functionality like ECC and signal processing onto the NAND die or dedicated controller die in the NAND package. [6,21]

Implications

Controller design is intimately tied to the NAND device. The degree is only increasing as NAND technology shrinks and NAND devices grow in complexity and density. Mobile Storage devices may exhibit dramatically different results depending on price and application requirements.

Motorola pokes fun at iOS6 Maps, wants to prevent people becoming #iLost

Android Central

By now, the vast majority of Android users -- no, make that people in the world -- have heard about Apple's new replacement for Google Maps in iOS6. Proudly announced during their iOS6 keynote, replacing Google Maps was another step away from using Google services for the Cupertino giant. Since the launch, much has been said about the maps, and their apparent lack of some key information within the maps themselves.

We'll admit it. It makes us chuckle. As we sit here using our native Google Maps, more and more we see comments arising from iPhone owners, both new and old, slating iOS6 Maps. And now, Google owned Motorola is joining in on the fun.

Looking for 315 E 15th in Manhattan? Google Maps on DROID RAZR M will get you there & not #iLost in Brooklyn.

Seen on the Motorola Mobility Google+ page, and on their Twitter page, the message is clear. While an obvious advertisement for their latest handset -- and perhaps the RAZR M's edge to edge screen, compared to the 'stretched' iPhone 5 -- rather than Google Maps itself, we wonder how long before the #iLost tag will catch on. Probably until Google releases a third-party Google Maps application into the iOS App Store, but until then, we can but chuckle away.

EAST LANSING, Mich. President Barack Obama holds a substantial lead in Michigan over Republican challenger Mitt Romney, although many of the state's voters remain undecided, according to Michigan State University's latest State of the State Survey.

In the quarterly survey, completed in August, the Democratic incumbent leads Romney 39 percent to 30 percent among likely voters, for a margin of 9 percentage points. The results come on the heels of an EPIC-MRA poll for the Detroit Free Press and a Detroit News/WDIV Local 4 survey that both show Obama with a commanding lead.

The MSU survey the largest of the three was taken before the national party conventions, at a time when 30 percent of those questioned were undecided. Republicans were more likely than Democrats to still be making up their minds, said Charles Ballard, survey director and professor of economics.

If the undecided voters follow party lines, Ballard said, Obama's lead would be 49 percent to 43 percent. "These results indicate that Gov. Romney faces an uphill battle in capturing the state of his birth," said Ballard. "Michigan has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1988 and the auto-industry rebound appears to favor President Obama. But the election is more than six weeks away, so there is still time for Romney to gain ground."

Among white voters, Obama and Romney are in a statistical dead heat, although Obama holds a commanding lead among black and Hispanic voters, Ballard said. Obama has a significant lead among both men and women. Obama leads by double digits in southeast Michigan, while Romney has a narrow lead in west Michigan.

The survey also measures approval ratings for the president and governor. In the latest survey, 41 percent give Obama a rating of "excellent" or "good." That is statistically unchanged from the previous survey.

"When Barack Obama first took office in 2009, Michigan residents gave him very high marks, with 71 percent saying he was doing an 'excellent' or 'good' job," Ballard said. "The president's ratings fell over the next year, however, and since early 2011 his positives have been between 40 percent and 45 percent."

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder's approval ratings increased but still remained lower than the president's. "The governor's ratings went from 33 percent positive in the spring to 36.8 percent in the current survey," Ballard said.

When it came to how Michiganders feel about their financial situation, about 54 percent call it "excellent" or "good," Ballard said. That's the highest reading since 2005, but still below the levels recorded in the late 1990s.

About 34 percent of residents said they are better off than they were a year ago. That's down slightly from 37 percent in the previous survey, but still higher than in any other survey since 2005. Some 47 percent of survey respondents expect to be better off a year from now.

The phone survey was conducted from June 12 to Aug. 13. A total of 1,015 Michigan adults were questioned in the survey, which has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.08 percent.

MSU's State of the State Survey has been conducted by the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research since 1994. IPPSR is a unit of MSU's College of Social Science.

The old adage "you are what you eat" is helping scientists better understand the threatened loggerhead turtle, which is the primary nester on Central Florida's beaches.

A study published today in the journal PLOS ONE describes how scientists at the University of Central Florida used a technique that links chemical signatures of the turtles' diets and their watery environments to their migratory routes. They found the technique just as effective as expensive satellite tracking.

Little is known about the turtles, which spend 99 percent of their time in the water and return to the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge's beach to nest once every two to three years. The 13-mile-long beach is home to the second-largest population of loggerheads in the world and to about one of every four nests those turtles lay in the United States.

While other turtles' nests are increasing along the refuge's shores, the loggerheads' have been declining since 2000. The technique validated by the UCF scientists could help managers preserve the turtles' nesting grounds, migration routes and foraging grounds, all of which are critical to their survival.

"We need good information so policy makers can focus the limited conservation funds available where they can make the greatest impact," said Simona Ceriani, the UCF graduate student who led the study. "We all want our children to see these beautiful creatures and not just read about them in a book."

In addition to validating the tracking technique, the study found that the foraging area for the Florida turtles is much broader than previously thought.

"Think of these turtles as Florida tourists and snowbirds," Ceriani said. "They come and nest and then go back to lots of different places. And while we knew some went back north, we had no idea that this was a popular destination."

Based on her tracking, some turtles head for the water off the shores of Virginia and Delaware while others go to the Bahamas and the Gulf of Mexico. Some stay off the coast of Central Florida's beaches. Previously, scientists believed the majority of the loggerheads headed south.

While there are efforts to protect the turtle nests on the beaches, protecting their foraging grounds is equally important, biologists say. Many turtles die because they accidently get caught in fishing nets or encounter other dangers while out at sea.

The technique Ceriani validated should aid those efforts.

She took small blood samples from turtles at the refuge and completed a chemical analysis, which measured distinct markers known as stable isotopes. She also attached transmitters to the turtles so she could follow them using the more expensive but proven satellite tracking technique. The isotope approach proved to be equally useful, and it is much less expensive.

"By combining isotope research with satellite tracking technology, we are learning exciting information about loggerhead sea turtles," said Daniel R. Evans, a research specialist at the Sea Turtle Conservancy and co-author of the research paper. "This research helps scientists and conservation managers identify key feeding areas for loggerhead turtles and helps direct policy and regulations that protect sea turtles in these specific areas."

Ceriani said she will continue to research the migratory routes by adding more loggerheads to the study.

###

Ceriani earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Milan in Italy and was a research fellow at Florida Atlantic University before joining UCF's PhD program in conservation biology in 2007.

Others who contributed to the study include: UCF Biologist, John Weishampel, James D. Roth from the University of Manitoba in Canada and Llewellyn M. Ehrhart from the Marine Turtle Research Group at UCF.

Several grants from Florida's Sea Turtle Grants Program funded this study. The program gets is funding from the sale of the Florida Sea Turtle License Plate.

Sea turtle monitoring at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge was coordinated through the University of Central Florida Marine Turtle Research Group, with funding from Brevard County, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the United States National Marine Fisheries Service.

Reading food labels helps shoppers stay thinner

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Shoppers -- particularly women -- who take the time to read food labels are thinner than those who don't.

These findings are from a recently released study authored by Steven T. Yen, a University of Tennessee professor in the Institute of Agriculture's Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, in conjunction with researchers at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, the University of Arkansas and the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural Finance Research.

Women who read food labels weighed nearly 9 pounds less than women who didn't read labels, according to the study. It also found that women read labels more than men, and the smoking population paid even less attention to label information.

"Reading food labels is important because it allows shoppers to improve diet quality by making more informed decisions in food purchases," Yen said.

The researchers used data from the annual "National Health Interview Survey" that was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The survey collected more than 25,000 observations on health, eating and shopping habits.

The study, which was published in the "Agricultural Economics" journal, examined the relationship between nutritional label use and obesity. The results showed that reading labels played a role in reducing obesity, especially among women.

"These findings imply that health education campaigns can employ nutritional labels as one of the instruments for reducing obesity," the report states.

Dow ends higher, Oracle falls after the bell

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow industrials ended slightly higher on Thursday while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq cut most of the day's losses in a sign that investor sentiment remains generally positive despite several weak manufacturing surveys from around the world.

Pockets of strength included housing, with an index of housing stocks <.hgx> up 0.8 percent, following Wednesday's gains on better-than-expected housing market data. The S&P energy index <.gspe> rose 0.4 percent, in sync with a rally in Brent crude oil prices after a three-day slide. The S&P utilities index <.gspu> also gained 0.4 percent.

"What's happening in the market is ?What's next?'" said John De Clue, global investment strategist at U.S. Bank, in Minneapolis. "It's a classic tug of war between indicators that things are improving and, on the other hand, some things appear to be a little more troubling."

Several economic indicators painted a sobering picture of the global economy. U.S. manufacturing closed out its weakest quarter in three years this month, and the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits held near two-month highs last week. The U.S. data followed disappointing manufacturing reports from Europe and China.

In a bright spot for the market, Trulia Inc surged 41.2 percent to close at $24 in its market debut, as investors bet an improvement in the housing market would benefit the online real estate listing service. At its session high, Trulia's stock touched $25.20 - up 48.2 percent from its initial public offering price of $17.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> rose 18.97 points, or 0.14 percent, to close at 13,596.93. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dipped 0.79 of a point, or 0.05 percent, to 1,460.26. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> fell 6.66 points, or 0.21 percent, to close at 3,175.96.

After the bell, shares of Oracle Corp slipped 0.53 percent to $32.09 after the company reported that quarterly hardware sales tumbled 24 percent from a year earlier as the technology giant continued its struggle to turn around the computer division it acquired with its purchase of Sun Microsystems. In regular trading, Oracle closed at $32.26, down 1.6 percent on Nasdaq.

The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index has gained 5.9 percent since the beginning of August, driven higher mostly by expectations of more stimulus from central banks. A week ago, the Federal Reserve announced its third round of stimulus or quantitative easing, known as QE3, helping push stocks up last Friday within reach of five-year highs.

In a sign of bullishness, UBS raised its target level for the S&P 500 by the end of 2012 to 1,525 from 1,375 on Thursday, saying equity markets will climb after aggressive monetary easing by central banks.

"Over the short run, we believe that the 'risk on' trade will continue, with a rotation into the most volatile and economically sensitive stocks," UBS' chief U.S. equity strategist Jonathan Golub wrote in a research note.

Transportation stocks, sensitive to the nation's economic fortunes, ranked among the worst performers, a day after railroad company Norfolk Southern Corp said its earnings would fall short of expectations. Norfolk shares slid 9.1 percent to $66.11.

The Dow Jones Transportation Average <.djt> dropped 2.8 percent.

Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren said on Thursday that the Fed's actions last week "should result in stronger economic growth, and return us to full employment more quickly than would be the case, absent the policies." He was speaking to bankers and business leaders in the metropolitan Boston area.

Manufacturing in China contracted for an 11th straight month in September, according to a private-sector survey of factory managers; in the euro zone, a downturn in activity in the service sector steepened this month at the fastest pace since July 2009.

Retailers' shares also fell. Bed, Bath & Beyond tumbled 9.8 percent to $62.08 a day after the company posted quarterly results that narrowly missed Wall Street's estimates as the result of higher costs.

Fellow retailer J.C. Penney Co Inc slumped 11.2 percent to $25.83 after Chief Executive Ron Johnson said new shops within stores are doing much better than other parts of its department stores, but it was "way too early to draw conclusions" as the retailer is still rolling out the strategy.

The Morgan Stanley retail index <.mvr> slid 1.2 percent.

Facebook Inc's shares fell 3 percent to $22.59 after the company said it will start charging businesses to run promotional offers on its social network, turning a free service into a potential source of revenue.

Volume totaled about 6.15 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the Amex, compared with the year-to-date average daily closing volume of 6.54 billion.

Decliners outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by a ratio of about 3 to 2, while on the Nasdaq, five stocks fell for every three that rose.

AP Sources: UNC's Roy Williams has surgery

North Carolina coach Roy Williams has had surgery to remove a kidney tumor, people familiar with the situation said Wednesday.

Two people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school has not publicly released any details on Williams. One of the people who spoke to the AP said the severity of the tumor is unknown.

Team spokesman Matt Bowers would only confirm that the 62-year-old Hall of Fame coach had a "medical procedure" Wednesday morning.

The news was first reported by WRAL in Raleigh, N.C.

Williams will open practice next month for his 10th season at his alma mater, where he spent 10 years as an assistant to Dean Smith before taking over at Kansas and leading the Jayhawks to four Final Fours. Williams, who has 675 wins in 24 seasons, won NCAA championships with the Tar Heels in 2005 and 2009.

The Tar Heels have won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title and reached the NCAA regional final the past two seasons.

Amazon brings Cloud Player music service to the UK: choice of free or premium tiers from 6 per year

Brits who've been straining for a reason to care about Amazon's budding Cloud Player service can probably relax. It's live in the UK as of now, offering 5GB of online storage and the ability to stream 250 of your tracks (or 256Kbps matched versions) to a range of devices free of charge. Adding extra storage will cost from £6 per year for 20GB, rising to £320 p/a for a full terabyte. If you're a heavy user, though, you may also need to fork out £22 p/a for the right to stream up to 250,000 of your tracks. Paying to play music you already purchased? Indeed, further exertion may be necessary to figure out if it's all worth it, along with a glance at the detailed press release after the break.
