Ultrasound reveals autism risk at birth, study finds

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Low-birth-weight babies with a particular brain abnormality are at greater risk for autism, according to a new study that could provide doctors a signpost for early detection of the still poorly understood disorder.

Led by Michigan State University, the study found that low-birth-weight newborns were seven times more likely to be diagnosed with autism later in life if an ultrasound taken just after birth showed they had enlarged ventricles, cavities in the brain that store spinal fluid. The results appear in the Journal of Pediatrics.

"For many years there's been a lot of controversy about whether vaccinations or environmental factors influence the development of autism, and there's always the question of at what age a child begins to develop the disorder," said lead author Tammy Movsas, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at MSU and medical director of the Midland County Department of Public Health.

"What this study shows us is that an ultrasound scan within the first few days of life may already be able to detect brain abnormalities that indicate a higher risk of developing autism."

Movsas and colleagues reached that conclusion by analyzing data from a cohort of 1,105 low-birth-weight infants born in the mid-1980s. The babies had cranial ultrasounds just after birth so the researchers could look for relationships between brain abnormalities in infancy and health disorders that showed up later. Participants also were screened for autism when they were 16 years old, and a subset of them had a more rigorous test at 21, which turned up 14 positive diagnoses.

Ventricular enlargement is found more often in premature babies and may indicate loss of a type of brain tissue called white matter.

"This study suggests further research is needed to better understand what it is about loss of white matter that interferes with the neurological processes that determine autism," said co-author Nigel Paneth, an MSU epidemiologist who helped organize the cohort. "This is an important clue to the underlying brain issues in autism."

Prior studies have shown an increased rate of autism in low-birth-weight and premature babies, and earlier research by Movsas and Paneth found a modest increase in symptoms among autistic children born early or late.

The study was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Geeksphone Keon hands-on: a small Firefox OS phone that has big dreams (video)

Geeksphone Keon hands-on

Geeksphone may be an online phone seller based in Spain, but the name of its lower-end Firefox OS reference phone, Keon, appears to be Dutch. Regardless of the title's origin, the part of the phone that's most intriguing is the fact that it's one of the first to bear Mozilla's mobile platform. It isn't much in the way of specs, and that's easy enough to tell from just glancing at it, thanks to a 3.5-inch HVGA display. Still, the Keon's set of specs is actually on par with the Firefox protocol. This means that for roughly around 100 euros, we can expect to see a device with a 3MP camera, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, a 1,580mAh battery and a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon S17225A CPU. Don't expect an earth-shattering experience on this kind of phone, as it's meant to reside strictly on the low end. The Keon will be making its way onto the official company store in the next few weeks, so stay tuned. In the meantime, we've made a lovely video and photo gallery below, so check them out.

Ronda Rousey: More concerned with sports bra than Liz Carmouche standing submission attempt at UFC 157

Ronda Rousey appeared to be moments away from defeat in the UFC 157 main event when Liz Carmouche nearly scored a submission win. Rousey overcame the adversity, and at the event's post-fight show on FUEL TV said she was more worried about her bra than Carmouche's submission attempt.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey survived the first serious scare of her seven-fight career when she escaped a first-round rear-naked choke attempt by Liz Carmouche in the main event of UFC 157: "Rousey vs. Carmouche" at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

To watch full fight video highlights of Ronda Rousey vs. Liz Carmouche click here.

Rousey (7-0) appeared moments away from being on the wrong side of the upset of the female combat sports century when Carmouche nearly locked in the choke from a standing position, but the champion survived and rallied back for a submission win of her own with just 14-seconds remaining in the opening round.

The fight was sensational, and on the UFC 157 post-fight show on FUEL TV, the 26-year-old champion talked to Ariel Helwani about Carmouche's submission attempt and how close "Girl-Rilla" was to making her quit, stating she was more worried about revealing herself to the world than tapping out.

Her words:

"I was thinking about my bra, actually. I kept thinking, I didn't order this one myself, so they gave me my weigh in bra for the fight. If you look back, I was adjusting myself at one point while she was on my back. Multitasking [laughs]!"

Rousey admitted Carmouche had her in the most danger of anything thus far in her mixed martial arts (MMA) career, but claimed she was comfortable through the heart-stopping sequence and said the only reason she found herself in that position was her willingness to take risks.

"I was trying just to ignore everything until I was out there. It was weird -- I was in there just yesterday so it felt like a familiar place. It didn't seem odd at all.... I think I was less nervous [for this fight]. I think I was most nervous for the Julia Budd fight, way back, I don't know why I was so nervous for that one. On the ground I feel so comfortable -- I don't ever feel like I'm in danger -- so I don't mind taking a lot of risks. I felt fine with her on my back, I was thinking more about keeping my sports bra up while she is trying to choke me. I felt very safe and in control even though it didn't look like that."

With the win over Carmouche, Rousey keeps her incredible undefeated streak intact and unless she encounters another near wardrobe malfunction that causes her to mind to slip, it's hard to see any women at 135-pounds defeating the face of female MMA.

Shane Lowry keeps right on rolling at Match Play

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) ? Shane Lowry said it would be one of the great days of his career if he were to beat Rory McIlroy in the Match Play Championship.

He just didn't want that to be the end of his week.

Lowry became a footnote in the 15-year history of this most fickle golf tournament on Friday when he became the first No. 64 seed to make it into the third round. It's difficult enough to knock off the No. 1 player in the world. The difficult part is to come back to earth and keep playing golf, and the Irishman did that with a game that was as brilliant as the sunshine on Dove Mountain.

He made five birdies in 13 holes, the last one carrying him to a 6-and-5 win over Carl Pettersson.

"I went out for dinner with the lads, my caddie and a few other guys, and I found it quite hard to sleep last night," Lowry said. "I was on such a high. There was people, lots of phone calls and texts and stuff. But I managed to get to sleep and get a few hours.

"Got up this morning, spoke to my coach for quite a while on the phone and just reminded myself that it was only the first round. The second round is today and just go out and look forward to it and enjoy every minute of it, and that's what I did."

Two days after dispatching one Irish friend, Lowry gets another Saturday morning.

Next up is Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland, who is in the same management stable as Lowry. McDowell, Lowry and McIlroy had dinner together Tuesday night at a rustic outpost called Lil Abners Steakhouse, and they planned to go back Thursday night ? minus McIlroy, who is back in Florida.

And if he were to take down McDowell, Lowry could even do damage to yet another Irishman. Lowry needed to win two matches Saturday to move into the top 50 in the world and qualify for the next World Golf Championship at Doral in two weeks, though that would mean bumping Padraig Harrington out of the top 50.

It's a lot to digest, even with his appetite.

McDowell was happy just to get to Saturday after watching Alex Noren of Sweden turn in a terrific putting performance, including an 8-foot slider on the 17th hole to take the lead. McDowell answered with a 9-iron into 4 feet for birdie on the 18th, and then he won in 20 holes when Noren couldn't escape from the desert.

"If Rory didn't intimidate him, I suppose what chance do I have?" McDowell said. "It's going to be a great match. He's a quality player. We practiced together this week. I took the money in practice. Hopefully, I can continue that role tomorrow."

The Match Play Championship is the most exciting two days in golf, though it slows with each round as half the field is eliminated.

In this case, most of the stars are already gone.

One day after McIlroy and Tiger Woods went home, more top seeds followed Friday when golf's most unpredictable tournament served up another reminder that the only time the word "upset" should be used is to describe the guys who are no longer playing.

Luke Donald, the No. 3 seed who is regarded among the best in match play, suffered his worst loss in 25 matches at this tournament. Louis Oosthuizen (No. 4) and Justin Rose (No. 5) never even reached the 17th tee when it was time for them to leave.

When another wild day ended at Dove Mountain, Masters champion Bubba Watson was the last man standing among the top 10 seeds.

"This game ... it's a toss-up," Watson said after going 22 holes to beat Jim Furyk. "You can't really judge who's going to win, or bet who's going to win. It really means nothing, is what I'm saying."

At least he's still playing, even though he made it hard on himself.

Watson missed a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have won the match. He missed another 5-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole. He had to stand to the side of the green as Furyk stood over a 12-foot putt to win the match. Given new life, Watson finally advanced to the third round.

It was the first time since this World Golf Championship began in 1999 that only one top-10 seed was remaining after two rounds.

"I think we're beyond surprises, in this event especially," McDowell said. "Anybody can have a great day and anybody can have a tough day. It's what makes the game exciting, and it's what makes this game extremely fickle and extremely frustrating."

Donald, who birdied his last two holes Thursday to win his opening match, didn't know what hit him.

Scott Piercy won the first three holes, and if that wasn't enough, he hit a 4-iron into the cup for eagle on the fifth hole and was on his way to a 7-and-6 win, a margin known as a "dog license" in Britain. Back in the day, it used to cost 7 schillings and six pence.

Robert Garrigus never trailed against Oosthuizen ? Garrigus hasn't trailed at all this week ? and sounded as though he had penciled himself into the final.

"I looked at all the guys in my bracket and I was like, 'I can beat him. I can beat him. And I can beat him.' If I'm playing well and putting well, I'm going to be hard to beat. And a lot of guys will tell you that, too, because I hit the ball in the fairway. Because these fairways are huge, and if I can keep it out of the bushes, I'll be all right out here."

He'll find out Saturday morning against Jason Day, who overcame a clutch putt on the 18th hole to beat PGA Tour rookie Russell Henley on the 19th.

In other matches:

? Defending champion Hunter Mahan had an easy time with Richard Sterne to win his eighth straight match, and next faces the last player to beat him in this event: Martin Kaymer, who defeated Rafael Cabrera Bello of Spain.

? U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to beat Peter Hanson. He plays Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who easily handled that other giant killer, Charles Howell III, the winner over Woods.

? Steve Stricker came out of retirement and knocked out Nick Watney on the 21st hole. It was the first time Watney has failed to reach the third round in this tournament, though it wasn't from a lack of effort. He birdied four of the last six holes to force overtime, scrambled for par from a desert bush on the second extra hole and ended his long day with a bogey to lose. Stricker next plays Piercy.

? Ian Poulter built a big lead over Bo Van Pelt and hung on to win on the 17th hole. Poulter is the No. 11 seed and faces Tim Clark of South Africa

"I played the type of golf that's going to be tough to beat," said Poulter, the 2010 Match Play champion. "I had seven birdies, no bogeys, and when you play like that, then obviously it's going to be a tough day for him."

The tough part for Van Pelt was leaving. He later tweeted that he had to remove golf tees from his bag to meet the 50-pound weight limit for luggage on the flight home.

HDD no longer being recognized by my windows installations

I had a drive in a laptop go, and I thought all of my data was gone. My backups to DVD as it turned out could not be read. As a last ditch effort, I stood the laptop up on end, like an open book. Having the axis of the drive reoriented from horizontal to vertical was enough for this drive to boot and allow me to transfer my data to a new drive - a huge relief to say the least.

You could play around with doing this, if you have a laptop or can otherwise change the orientation of the drive.

From what you are saying, it sounds like it could be a bad or loose electrical connection as well, though the drive itself seems like the easiest thing to check by swapping it out.

Harris grew up in Baltimore and was a fan of the Temptations as a teenager. Along with three high school friends, he formed a Temptations cover band called the Young Tempts, which changed its name to the Young Vandals after releasing their first singles on the Isley Brothers' T-Neck label.

In 1971, he auditioned to join his idols when one of the original lead singers, Eddie Kendricks, left the band. Since the group already had one Otis in founding member Otis Williams, Harris changed his first name to Damon.

In 1975, Harris left the Temptations and rejoined his high school friends, now renamed Impact. The group recoorded two disco and funk albums, "Impact" and "The Pac is Back" and scored a hit with their 1976 track "Give a Broken Heart a Break."? 'Blade Runner' granted bail ahead of murder trial

Though the judge admitted he has problems with Pistorius' account of the night he allegedly shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, he set the Olympian free on bail, citing mistakes made by the prosecution.

By Michelle Kosinski, Rohit Kachroo and Ian Johnston, NBC News

PRETORIA, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius was granted bail Friday pending his trial for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Olympic and Paralympic star Pistorius, dubbed the ?Blade Runner,? maintains he did not realize Steenkamp was in the locked bathroom of his home in a suburb of Pretoria, South Africa, and fired through the door in a panic over a possible prowler early on Valentine's Day.

However, prosecutors say the 26-year-old committed the ?premeditated murder? of Steenkamp, 29, a model and trained lawyer, who was staying overnight at his house.

On the fourth day of his bail hearing Friday, Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair told the court that he had "come to the conclusion that the accused has made a case to be granted bail."

There was a cry of "yes" from the public gallery after his decision, and his relatives embraced, cried and prayed.

In contrast to the joy of his relatives, Pistorius looked upset.

Nair spoke for more than 90 minutes prior to announcing his decision, summarizing the testimony given to the four-day hearing, citing previous cases and the relevant laws.

He said he had ?difficulty? with several aspects of Pistorius? account of what happened, talking of a number of ?improbabilities.?

?I have difficulty in appreciating why the accused did not ascertain the whereabouts of his girlfriend,? Nair said. He said he also struggled to understand ?why the accused would not seek to ascertain who was in the toilet? before opening fire.

'Not a flight risk'
But he said he had concluded that Pistorius was "not a flight risk" and said there was no evidence before him that the athlete might interfere with state witnesses. He also said he did not have evidence to suggest Pistorius was "not of a stable mind."

Nair also criticized Warrant Officer Hilton Botha ? a police officer pulled from the case because he is facing attempted murder charges?-- for making ?several errors? during his testimony to the bail hearing.

He also said Botha had ?blundered? when he claimed to have found testosterone in Pistorius? room and had not ?spent as much time as he ought to have if he wanted to show the accused has a propensity to violence.?

Nair set bail at a million rand (about $112,000). Pistorius, who was to be freed on payment of the money, was ordered to report to a police station twice a week, among a number of bail conditions.

Pistorius was also ordered to stay away from witnesses, surrender his passports, hand over his firearms and not drink alcohol. The case was then adjourned until June 4.

The athlete left the court at about 5:45 p.m. local time (10:45 a.m ET).?He could be seen in a silver Land Rover that was pursued by members of the media on motorcycles after it left the court compound, Reuters reported. The SUV traveled to the home of Pistorius' uncle, Arnold Pistorius, in the Pretoria suburb of Waterkloof, where at least five private security guards kept reporters at bay.

Medupe Simasiku, a spokesman for the prosecution, said that they respected the court?s decision.

?We would like to assure everyone that we?re still confident of this case,? he said. ?We believe that we will make it through during the trial."

Before the bail decision, prosecutor Gerrie Nel had told the court that ?one must stretch? to believe Pistorius? account of what happened on the night of the shooting.

And Nel questioned why Steenkamp would have stayed silent and not alerted Pistorius that she was in the bathroom.

?Why would she not have shouted, 'Where are you (Oscar)? What's going on??? Nel said. ?She did not say a word. She did not scream. She did nothing! I think that's improbable. ... It's not true!"

In a statement read to the court on Tuesday, Pistorius described waking up?and and going to his bedroom balcony to bring a fan inside and close the sliding glass doors and blinds. After hearing a noise in the bathroom, the double-amputee said he felt "a sense of terror" and feared a prowler was in the house.

Pistorius' account added:

"I fired shots at the toilet door and shouted at Reeva to phone the police. She did not respond and I moved backwards out of the bathroom, keeping my eyes on the bathroom entrance. Everything was pitch dark in the bedroom and I was still too scared to switch on a light. Reeva was not responding.

"When I reached the bed, I realized that Reeva was not in bed. That is when it dawned on me that it could have been Reeva who was in the toilet."

Defense lawyer Barry Roux told the court before the decision on bail that Pistorius should at most be charged with culpable homicide, which is the unlawful, negligent killing of someone under South African law.

He said ?intent? to possibly kill a burglar could not be transferred to become intent to kill Steenkamp.

Roux said Pistorius would not be able to flee the country unnoticed. If he went through security at an airport, "the system would react."

The lawyer added that Pistorius would not skip bail, saying that his prosthetics needed adjustment every month and that he also required medication for his stomach.

The arrest of Pistorius stunned millions who watched in awe last year as the sprinter reached the semi-final of the 400 meters at the London 2012 Olympics.

In South Africa, Pistorius was seen as a rare hero who commanded respect from both blacks and whites, transcending the racial divides that persist 19 years after the end of apartheid.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Red Sox top Northeastern 3-0 in exhibition opener

By NOAH TRISTER

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:30 p.m. ET Feb. 21, 2013

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Joel Hanrahan last started a regular-season game in 2007, so pitching the top of the first was an unusual experience for Boston's new closer.

About a half-hour before the Red Sox took on Northeastern in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday, Hanrahan wasn't completely sure what to do.

"Should I get going? Should I wait? But I took it kind of as a real game when I was warming up," he said. "I took my normal 18 pitches to get ready for a game, walked in the dugout, grabbed a drink of water and went out. It wasn't bad."

Hanrahan struck out two hitters in the first inning, and the Red Sox beat Northeastern 3-0 in the first exhibition game of spring training. Hanrahan was brought in to anchor the Boston bullpen this season, but the Red Sox gave him the start for this seven-inning game.

The Red Sox faced Boston College in the doubleheader's second game.

Northeastern's Aaron Barbosa led off with a two-strike single, and that was the only hit Hanrahan allowed. The right-hander also hit Jason Vosler with a pitch in his only inning.

"I was happy with how it went," Hanrahan said. "I wasn't planning on hitting that kid - poor guy. But I threw strikes for the most part so I was happy with that."

Adding to the informal vibe, Boston came out to bat in the bottom of the seventh even though it led 3-0. Boston tacked on two more runs, which weren't included in the box score.

Boston used seven pitchers for an inning each, and none of them allowed more than one hit. Daniel Bard worked the second, allowing a single to his first batter before striking out the next three.

"I'm satisfied," Bard said. "Not perfect obviously but it's a huge step in the right direction. It's always good to get out the gate with some good results."

Boston beat Northeastern 25-0 last year, but although several regulars started the game, the Red Sox were fairly quiet offensively. Designated hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first, and Boston added additional runs in the fifth and sixth.

Hanrahan started 11 games for Washington in his first big league season, but he's been exclusively a reliever ever since. He saved 76 games in the last two seasons for Pittsburgh, which made him an attractive target for a Boston team that lost 93 games in 2012.

Andrew Bailey was expected to be Boston's closer last season, but he missed most of the year with an injury, and now Hanrahan is taking over that role.

Bard is hoping to bounce back after going 5-6 with a 6.22 ERA last year. Manager John Farrell was satisfied with what he saw from both him and Hanrahan.

"As we set out every pitcher to go the mound - establish fastball, attack the zone with it. Both did," Farrell said. "The objective that we set out today, we've been able to accomplish that."

Andrew Miller, Alex Wilson, Clayton Mortensen, Pedro Beato and Anthony Carter pitched the rest of the game for the Red Sox.

Notes: Boston has won all 11 meetings with Northeastern by a combined score of 139-6. ... The Red Sox take on the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. RHP John Lackey, who was sidelined all last year following elbow-ligament replacement surgery, is expected to pitch in that game.

"

Two other women, also breast cancer survivors, said their husbands left them after they were diagnosed. Both had to have mastectomies (in case anyone doesn?t know, this is the surgical operation to remove one or both breasts).

The first woman said her husband told her that he would rather see her dead than see her lose her breasts. The second woman had her operation and waited all day to be picked up by her husband, who never arrived. By nightfall, one of the nurses offered to give her a ride, and she came home to find the house empty.

Obviously, these are extreme cases of a man?s reaction to his wife?s breast cancer, but this is what I see when I see the ?I ? Boobies? bracelets. I see love of the body parts, not the person being treated?not the patient, not the victim, not the survivor.

Vegas Mayor Disappointed Over Cheating Allegations

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly reported that interim Fire Chief Scott Fuller of Las Vegas?resigned Wednesday. Fuller remains the interim fire chief. 8 News Now regrets the?error.?

LAS VEGAS -- An investigation has been launched into allegations of widespread cheating among the latest group of recruits for the City of Las Vegas Fire Department.

The city launched this investigation as a result of an incident that took place during a written exam at the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Academy. The academy is 20 weeks long.

Because of the investigation, the recruits' graduation that was supposed to take place Thursday was canceled.

The fire department declined to comment on the allegations.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman called the cheating allegations disappointing.

"It's a tough job to get, and a tough job to do," she said.

Twice a year, hundreds apply to be a Las Vegas firefighter, with only about 30 actually making it to the recruiting class.

The class that was supposed to graduate Thursday had 14 recruits.

The reward? A sizable salary and honored place in the community.

Reporter: Is there an incentive to cheat, to try and keep this position?

Goodman responded, "That's a difficult question. I mean, there's always wonderful people in our world. Thank heavens they outweigh those who might shortcut and do different things. I'm just not a believer that anything's really happened."

The academy's recruits go through rigorous state practical and written tests to become a firefighter.

It was during an exam a city spokesperson said cheating may have occurred, something Goodman said she hopes is not the case.

"At this point it's under investigation," she said. "Just for that alone that makes me sad."

According to the Nevada State Fire Marshal's Office, the firefighter's written test consists of about 100 questions selected at random from a pool of 500 to 600.

Nevada State Fire Marshal Chief Peter Mulvihill said he believes the test is passable.

"If the student studies and applies themselves, they can be successful," he said.

The local firefighters union declined comment, other than saying it's a personnel issue and they "fully support the investigation."

In a statement released to 8 News NOW Wednesday night, Las Vegas spokesman David Riggleman said, "Integrity is a core value of the city of Las Vegas and allegations of this nature are taken very seriously."

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Chief Mike Myers just resigned from his position last week.

Goodman said that his resignation was "absolutely not" related to the cheating allegations.

They only reason the chief resigned is because his wife accepted a new position across the country.

Harrison Ford Will Return as Han Solo

According to Latino Review, Harrison Ford is certain to reprise his role as Han Solo in Star Wars Episode VII.

The rumors about who will return to the franchise have been flying around ever since the initial announcement and we seem to have our first glimpse at the casting.

Latino Review?s El Mayimbe was a guest on Fox News Latino where he broke the news. He announced ?It?s official. Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars movies? Triple checked?Legitimate sources.? There is no word on how his role will play out.

Those who do not trust this announcement must know that Latino Review have previously broke major film news. Mayimbe?references Marion Cotillard being cast as Talia Al Ghul, despite her protests to the contrary and J.J. Abrams directing the next Star Wars (which was again labelled as fake until it was later proved to be true) as evidence.

While not officially confirmed, this could help to reassure some fans (like me) who are cautious?of continuing the franchise. What do you think?

Madoff emails from jail: I wish I hadn't pleaded guilty

Bernie Madoff says he is frustrated.

Writing to me from the federal prison where he is serving a life sentence for his epic fraud, Madoff said he is not getting credit for what he calls his "instrumental" role in returning money to his victims. Madoff wrote that he is so frustrated, he is having second thoughts about having pleaded guilty four years ago.

The email tirade?six e-mails in all?follows comments this week by court-appointed trustee Irving Picard, who revealed to CNBC Tuesday that he will seek court approval for another distribution of funds to Madoff victims. That would bring the total payout to more than $5 billion, out of more than $9 billion recovered so far. But Picard said his success is no thanks to Madoff.

"In my view, he has not been helpful," Picard said.

Read More: Money to Be Returned to Madoff Investors Tops $5 Billion

That set off Madoff.

"This is a man that keeps making statements that have no facts to back them up," Madoff wrote. "I wish I went to trial and he would have been required to provide the evidence he claims he has. As you can see, I am frustrated."

Madoff claims his efforts behind the scenes are the reason so much money?more than half his clients' initial investments?has been recovered, and why ultimately all of the $17.5 billion in lost principal could ultimately be paid back.

Related:Are you working for minimum wage? We want to hear from you.

"From the day of my arrest I offered to assist in recovering the investment principal of my customers. I stated that I was confident that I would be able to convince those parties that were complicit in creating my financial problems, to return the money they withdrew from the investment advisory side of my firm. Those parties were well aware of the incriminating evidence I possessed about their complicit activity and wisely came forward with settlements. It was my belief that it was more important to use the evidence I had to pressure the complicit parties to settle, rather than to use this information for a lesser prison sentence for myself. As remorseful as I am for the pain and suffering I have shamefully caused, I take some comfort in the fact that my assistance will in fact accomplish what I have originally claimed, that with my assistance all of my customers will recover their original investment principal."

Read More: Scam of the Century: Bernie Maddof's Crime and Punishment

The largest settlement so far?and the lion's share of the funds recovered for investors?has come from one person: Florida billionaire Jeffry Picower?Madoff's largest client?who died of a heart attack soon after the fraud came to life. Picower's estate turned over $7.2 billion to be distributed to Madoff's other investors, and Madoff claims he is the reason why.

"When I spoke to Picower prior to his death," Madoff wrote, "I made it very clear I would testify about the role of him and ... [others]."

He said he demanded Picower return all the money he had withdrawn from his Madoff accounts over the years.

An attorney for the Picower family calls Madoff's allegation "entirely false."

"There were no conversations between Mr. Madoff and Mr. Picower after Madoff's arrest," said Marcy Ressler Harris, a partner at Schulte, Roth & Zabel in New York.

In a lawsuit filed in May, 2009, Picard alleged Picower was "one of a handful of BLMIS clients with special access to information," including Madoff's fictitious rates of return, and that Picower knew Madoff had backdated trades for him.

Picower died five months after the lawsuit was filed, and his wife settled with Picard in 2011. But Picard said Madoff had nothing to do with it, or any of the other money recovered. Picard said even when he interviewed Madoff in prison on two separate occasions, Madoff was not forthcoming.

"The interviews of him were, really, to confirm the information we found, because those interviews took place shortly before some of our litigations began, and we put this case together really from a blank slate," Picard told CNBC.

Madoff wrote that he has repeatedly offered more help to Picard and his team, but they have not taken him up on it.

"You should be aware that I have continued to offer Picard information concerning the complicity of the banks," Madoff wrote. "I was the only person in my firm that dealt with the officers that handled my account. Not Frank (DiPascali, a Madoff lieutenant who has pleaded guilty to fraud charges) nor anyone else. I have little doubt that the information I could provide would clearly demonstrate the vital role the major banks? played, in the carrying out my fraud, including their role in handling the accounts of my major customers. The ball is in his court."

"There's always the suggestion that there's more that he could help us with," said Picard's chief counsel, David Sheehan. "But when we pressed his counsel to give us an example of that before we start getting on an airplane and fly down to see him, we never get anything that's worthwhile. So we have not taken him up on those offers."

Madoff said he has a theory as to why Picard is not giving him credit for his assistance.

"I certainly can understand his reasons for not acknowledging my role. How could he JUSTIFY HIS FEES," Madoff asked.

Picard and his firm, BakerHostetler, have billed more than $600 million in fees and expenses, money that is paid by Wall Street firms through their dues to the Securities Investor Protection Corporation.

Madoff wrote, "Picard and Sheehan constantly demonstrate their lack of knowledge of how the market making and proprietary firms operate."

He said that is particularly clear when they allege, as they did to CNBC this week, that Madoff's son Mark "knew or should have known" about the fraud. Mark Madoff committed suicide in 2010, on the second anniversary of his father's arrest. Mark Madoff and his brother Andrew worked in Madoff's trading operation, which was separate from his investment advisory business.

"The fact is that the SEC requires the various trading desks to have a CHINESE WALL between each Department," Madoff wrote. "This includes separate supervisors as well as separate profit and loss bookkeeping so that there can be no conflict of interest regarding each other's inventory and trading positions. These Chinese wall procedures are strictly examined by the SEC and FINRA during surprise audits at least twice a year.

As they are well aware, the advisory department was located two floors below the market making and proprietary trading departments and were restricted to card key access which was also audited by the regulators. I should add that our firm has NEVER been found to NOT be in compliance EVER."

Madoff also continues to insist his fraud began in 1992, even though Picard and Sheehan say they have records suggesting the fraud could date back to the 1970s.

"In response to the Trustee's past claims in regard to date the fraud began. I completely dispute his claim of it dating back prior to my statement of the early 1990's. After four years and hundreds of millions of dollars of auditing fees he has not produced any evidence to support his claim."

Adobe preemptively cuts prices to avoid wrath of Australian lawmakers

Adobe preemptively cuts prices to avoid wrath of Australian lawmakers

Adobe has suddenly knocked 20 percent off its prices in Australia just one day after it was summoned to publicly defend those prices in front of a parliamentary committee. The monthly fee for a subscription to Adobe's full Creative Cloud has dropped from AU$63 to AU$50, so it's now only $1 more than the US price when you factor in currency. The no-contract monthly cost has also fallen to match how much Americans pay -- from AU$95 to AU$75 -- which is exactly what Australian lawmakers have been demanding since 2011. We can't decide if this is a move of brilliant cunning on Adobe's part, or just a blatant effort to side-step blame for how much it's been charging up to this point. Either way, it puts Microsoft and Apple in a sticky situation, because they've been summoned to the same inquiry and may be left with fewer excuses to cling to.

US Oil Prices Jump 1.4% to Break 3-Day Losing Streak

U.S. crude futures jumped 1.4% to climb above $97 a barrel Monday, as traders cashed in on bets that the price gap between the world's two crude benchmark would widen, traders and analysts said.

Brent futures, the European benchmark, hit an eight-month high of $118.92 a barrel last Friday, which pushed its spread with the U.S. benchmark of West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, to $23.18, the biggest gap in 11 weeks. WTI moved higher as some investors took profits after betting that spread would widen by wagering Brent futures would rise while WTI fell, says Kyle Cooper, managing partner at the Houston-based consultancy IAF Advisors.

"Last week, the Brent market was hot, and WTI was not," said Tim Evans, analyst at Citi Futures Perspective in New York. "Everything is swinging today back in the other direction."

West Texas Intermediate light, sweet crude for March delivery settled $1.31 higher at $97.03 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude on the ICE futures exchange settled 77 cents, or 0.7%, lower, at $118.13 a barrel, pulling back from an eight-month high it hit on Friday. The price gap shrank to $21.10.

The two crude benchmarks have traditionally traded within a few dollars of each other, but Brent has risen sharply against WTI over the last two years because a glut of oil has developed in Cushing, Okla., where the WTI contract is settled. Crude from newly discovered shale formations in Canada and the Midwest has pooled in Cushing, which lacked the sufficient pipelines to carry the oil to the refining complex along the coast of the Gulf Of Mexico.

This has weighed on WTI prices, while Brent is free of such concerns. The price gap hit a high of $27.88 in October 2013. However, the spread shrank to below $16 earlier this year when the capacity of the Seaway pipeline, which carries crude from Cushing to the Gulf, was increased from 150,000 barrels a day to 400,000 barrels a day.

But U.S. oil prices have been declining since Feb. 1 due to problems with the Seaway pipeline, which cut its capacity to the terminal at the end of the pipeline to 175,000. Fears of a growing glut again pushed U.S. prices down--and prompted bets that the spread between Brent and WTI would diverge.

Whether WTI can sustain Monday's rally will depend on oil supply data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on Wednesday, traders and analysts said. If weekly crude-oil stockpiles fall more than analysts expect, "that might provide an impetus for prices to move higher," Cooper says.

A stronger euro also supported U.S. oil prices as the weaker dollar makes dollar-denominated crude less expensive for buyers of other currencies. The euro rose against the dollar after Jens Weidmann, European Central Bank member and president of Germany's central bank, said the euro was not seriously overvalued.

Front-month March reformulated gasoline blendstock, or RBOB, settled 3.76 cents, or 1.2%, lower, to $3.0212 a gallon. March heating oil settled 0.7 cent, or 0.2%, lower, to $3.2315 a gallon.

College wrestling notebook: Rider coach looks forward to Sunday challenge at Penn State

Penn State?s rugged February wrestling road trip has ended with the Nittany Lions going 3-1, losing only to Iowa. Penn State will be home on Sunday for Senior Day festivities at 2 p.m. at Rec Hall. The match is once again a sellout.

Rider will be the foe and odds are that the match could end in Penn State?s fourth shutout of the season. But Rider coach Gary Taylor, who won his 390th career match on Sunday when Rider defeated Drexel 26-12, is looking forward to it.

?That?s going to be a tough trip,?? Taylor said in a school release. ?For Penn State to give us that opportunity and gain some exposure for our program, I am thankful to their coaching staff.

?It helps a program like ours to compete in that environment. It?s a very special environment and it is going to be sold out and lively.??

Rider is 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Elsewhere over the college wrestling weekend, Iowa defeated Nebraska 31-7 as No.1 Derek St. John at 157 defeated Nebraska?s No. 4 James Green 6-4 and Iowa?s Mike Evans of Cumberland Valley and Blair Academy downed Robert Kokesh 9-6.
